"Invalid Back Web 194057"

Question: For about the last six weeks, when I boot up my computer I get this error message: "Invalid Back Web 194057" I have Windows XP with SP2. I have AVG and Adaware installed as well as XP's firewall. It doesn't seem to interfere with Microsoft Updates or anything else. It is a nuisance. How do I get rid of it? Susie

I was pretty sure I new the answer, but I needed a little more info to be sure. Follow up confirmed that she owned a Compaq Presario and that she had Spybot installed in the past but had removed it.

The Answer:
The answer to this one is that Spybot caused the error.

From the HP/Compaq web site - This error message probably occurred, because a spyware removal application incorrectly detected the Updates from HP Connections or Compaq Connections client software (developed by BackWeb Technologies), as spyware and improperly removed it. Since only part of the client software was removed, the errors displays because the software cannot fully open when Windows starts.

Updates from HP or Compaq Connections is a messaging service that comes pre-installed on HP and Compaq desktop computers. The service provides product notices, support updates, tips, and special offers specifically for your model of HP or Compaq PC.

You can uninstall the update service from Add/Remove programs to get rid of the error and then if you want to use that feature, you might be able to reinstall it from the supplied CD’s (if any) or you can do a system restore back to factory condition. BESURE TO BACK UP YOUR DATA

A word of caution - While we really need tools like Spybot and Adaware and Windows Defender, they are not foolproof or perfect and they should be used with caution. If they are kept up to date, they will protect your machine by preventing the installation of malware and this is their main benefit. The thing you have to be careful of is when you first install them and you do your initial scan, you need to be aware of what you are doing and what you are removing or disabling. This is a perfect example of a valid program installed by the manufacturer of your computer that is not properly identified by some spyware programs.
